Custom type can mean a single character or a complex type family with more than ten members. It can also mean an adjustment to an excisting typeface or a design from scratch. CakeType has produced typefaces for KPN and road signage in South Korea, amongst others, as well as the lettering for the KWF Kankerbestrijding logo and Bookedoo logos.

CakeType designed KPN Display as part of the redesign of the corporate identity of KPN (Royal Dutch Telecom) in 2006 by Studio Dumbar. The type family has three weights, each containing over 700 glyphs, categorised in three different styles (sets) from sober to exuberant. Every style has a set of connected lowercase glyphs (the slogan line of KPN is “Sluit je aan” which means “connects you”) and they all share a collection of swashed lowercase and uppercase characters. KPN uses the second set of glyphs, with the characteristic open “e” as their main headline typeface.
