Similar to how Pieter developed the Alterego type family – available from Bold Monday – Quokka took shape by duplicating and layering the same bitmap letters in Adobe Photoshop. Experimenting with multiplication, transparency, and layer sequencing produced the final letterforms. At a later stage, Pieter rounded the corners of the bitmap shapes for a custom typeface proposal that, unfortunately, ended up in the “unused projects” drawer. Proving the adage “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure,” Quokka was retrieved from said drawer and added to the CakeType collection. Because the letter e looks so happy, the typeface was named after the Quokka, the diminutive, perpetually smiling cousin of kangaroos and wallabies.
